Episode 6. Merida part 1

Episode #6 takes Ben and Marlise to one of their favorite Mexican cities, Merida. A latin version of the Champs-Elysees, this charming city is full of bustling streets, lively parks, cultural activities, and savory Yucatan cuisine like Cochinita pibil and sopa de lima. Setting this area apart from neighboring communities are the stunning haciendas-turned-hotels tucked down narrow oneway streets. One of their top selections was Casa Lecanda where they spent their first night before hitting the town for several hours of inspections. The couple powered up with an authentic meal at a local favorite, Amaro.

Episode 5. Celestun

Episode 5 takes Ben and Marlise to the coastal town of Celestun. Overnighting at Xixim Eco Resort, the couple enjoyed an early morning tour of Reserva de la Biosfera Ria Celestun. This 200,000 acre wildlife reserve is comprised of an extensive mangrove forest and has one of the largest colonies of flamingoes in North America. More than 350 species of birds find refuge in this coastal area, just 56 miles west of the bustling city of Merida.

Episode 4. Valladolid

Episode 4 highlights Ben and Marlise’s visit to the picturesque provincial town of Valladolid, a direct shot south from Rio Lagartos. After a hotel inspection near the ruins of Ek Balam, the pair arrived to Casa Tia Micha, a little gem they will be featuring in the upcoming edition of the travel guide. The century-old home was recently converted into a boutique hotel and is conveniently located in the heart of the city. By night Ben and Marlise watched the locals in action at a youth boxing match, and by day they wandered into the Cenote Zaci, a stunning sinkhole at the edge of town.

Episode 3. Ria Lagartos

Day 3 of our trip took us from Isla Holbox to Parque Natural Ria Lagartos. The estuary is home to flamingos, turtles, crocodiles and over 350 species of birds. After lunch and inspections, we joined Ria Lagartos Adventures for a tour of the mangroves.

Episode 2. Isla Holbox

Episode 2 takes Ben and Marlise from Cancun, along the desolate jungle roads to the port town of Chiquila. The two hour drive gives them a taste of true Mexican culture, far from the all-inclusive resorts of Cancun. A 30-minute boat ride from Chiqula drops them on the pristine island of Isla Holbox. Void of cars, the only meas of transportation on the island are bikes or golf carts. White sandy streets are lined with palapa hotels and restaurants, many of which Ben and Marlise inspected during their two days on the island. The couple selected Hotel Las Nubes as their resort of choice, a stunning five-star property perched at the end of the island. One of the highlights of their stay was a sunset cruise where Ben tried his luck at sailing.

Episode 1: Le Blanc, Cancun

Episode 1 follows Ben and Marlise on the first 24 hours of their month-long adventure through the Yucatan Peninsula and Riviera Maya. An early morning departure and delayed flights leave the two arriving at their destination past midnight. Bathrobes and room service greet the exhausted pair at Le Blanc Resort in Cancun, Mexico, giving them just enough energy to depart on their road trip to the remote island of Isla Holbox.
